About Showdepot, a project by Space Encounters Office for Architecture

This cuboid monolith, measuring 18 x 18 x 18 meters, emerges as an abstract volume in its industrial setting. Meticulously aligned with the orthogonal structure of the surrounding streets and buildings, it follows the industrial logic of the site. Yet, despite its geometric simplicity, the building asserts itself as a humble landmark — modest in its form but profound in its purpose.

The cube reflects the lifelong passion of the client, whose existence revolves around collecting and displaying art. The architecture acts merely as a backdrop for their works, allowing the art to take center stage. The Showdepot functions not only as a depot but as an ongoing exhibition of the private collection of the client. A visit to the collection can be arranged by appointment only.

Its facade softly captures and refracts its surroundings through brushed aluminum cladding. A shift in weather, from moving clouds to bright sun-rays, transforms the building’s appearance. This ever-changing interplay of light and form creates a dialogue between the structure and its context. In this way, the Showdepot seems both distinct from, yet at one with its industrial environment. Each facade features a single opening, thoughtfully placed to respond to the function and orientation of the interior spaces. These variations in size and composition give each side its own distinct character, lending a sense of subtle playfulness and human scale to the monolithic form of the design.
