Double ground usage with smart extension
The family of the JM House wanted more living space. But they didn’t want to leave their home in the dynamic Pijp district near the centre of Amsterdam. This solution was a sensitive extension that doubled their living space while still allowing for green and sunny garden areas.
At the heart of the project was an extended kitchen area, which had the effect of spatially con-necting the old and new parts of the home. The kitchen was also transformed into an intelligent cabinet that supplies and hides various functions. A corridor gradually steps down into the garden and acts as a place to play and study.
Pushing the extension into the ground in this way retains a sense of space and enables an elevated terrace. The wooden patio is accessible from the old and new areas of the house, and stairs rise from the patio to a sunny and private terrace that overlook a roof garden on top of the extension.
